Thanksgiving Pie Guide

by The Culinistas

The table’s set, the turkey’s basted, the potatoes are mashed, and the wine is poured. But wait, who was on pie duty? The sweetest part of the turkey day feast should never be left until the last moment. Especially since New York City is home to some of the finest pies around. Order soon, as they go quick!

The ultimate Thanksgiving pie destination, this Gowanus bakery churns out everything from Salted Caramel Apple to Black Bottom Oat. The founders, two sisters from South Dakota, make sure to prioritize seasonal ingredients whenever possible, and the result is nothing short of delicious. Before Thanksgiving, a trip to the bakery (or the new location inside the Brooklyn Public Library) for sample slice and a cup of coffee is highly recommended.

This year our favorite Greenpoint bakery teamed up with our favorite pie maven Erin McDowell to bring two delicious pies to Thanksgiving goers everywhere. The Caramel Pumpkin is rich yet airy and a perfect match for vanilla ice cream, while the Black Bottom Pecan is velvety on the inside and crunchy on top, giving a traditional pecan pie a run for its money. Pickup and delivery available.

You can’t go wrong with a restaurant that was born on Thanksgiving Day. Bubby’s, a 27 year old Tribeca institution, serves up more than just Thanksgiving dinner. Pies of all shapes and sizes, including a very delicious Michigan Sour Cherry are on the menu for both shipment and pick up.

Diner alum Sarah Sanneh and Carolyn Bane opened Williamsburg Pies ‘n’ Thighs in 2006. Since then, they’ve racked up accolades like Best Apple Pie by Food & Wine, among others. For a more traditional southern experience we recommend the Bourbon Pecan; Sour Cherry Pear is also a solid move.

Pies for all! Petee’s specializes in pies made with organic flour and grass-fed butter from New York State, in addition to offering gluten free and vegan options. While you can’t go wrong with a classic fruit or southern chess variety, the Lemon Poppyseed Meringue caught our eye.
