Meet the California duo — Becca Millstein and Caroline Goldfarb — behind Fishwife, the sustainable, high-quality tinned seafood company making waves in the fish biz. Their goods are protein-packed, high in vitamins and minerals, and rich in fatty acids. The wild-caught smoked albacore tuna and wild-caught smoked salmon is a match made in heaven.
Here, we catch up with Becca on even more reasons to love tuna,
love limerence at first sight, and what’s it been like to be in the captain’s seat when it comes to running a business.
The Culinistas: Why do you think vision health can get, ahem, overlooked?
Fishwife: It’s easy to think that we can’t have a significant impact on our vision health without the intervention of medicine, surgery, or a medical professional. I think folks overlook alternative holistic approaches to improving vision health, like diet, exercise, proper protective eyewear, and all-around healthy consumption (avoiding excessive smoking, drinking, etc.).
TC: What’s the biggest impact of tuna on vision health?
FW: The omega-3s in tuna are believed to have a positive impact on eye health! I’ve read that eating multiple servings of tuna per week can significantly decrease the risk of developing dry eye.
TC: What is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen?
FW: One of the most beautiful moments in my life thus far has been floating on my back in the Colorado River on the border of California and Arizona. It’s all towering red rocks and azure water, very hot air and very cool water.
TC: Do you believe in love at first sight?
FW: I believe in limerence at first sight. Love comes once many conversations and moments have been shared.
TC: What’s one thing you’ve always had your eye on, but never tried?
FW: I’ve never eaten caviar, and have always wanted to. I’m glad I have it to look forward to.
TC: Looking back, what helped you through 2020?
FW: Starting this company (Fishwife) in 2020 was an incredible gift to me and Caroline. It’s this wonderful project, in which there’s always more fun work (and hard work) to be done, so I always have something interesting to learn, or some new wonderful person to talk to about fish.
TC: What big changes are you eyeing for 2021?
FW: We’re rolling out some super exciting, delicious new tins this year, and really growing the company in every direction possible. Our overarching goal is to reinvigorate the identity of tinned fish in American culinary culture, and we’ll start to get a sense of the scope of that potential in 2021.
